Healthy Nutrition and Menachinon-7 Against Vitamin K Deficiency
To keep bones healthy, exercise, vitamin D, and calcium are important. That was the common expert opinion until recently. Now we know there's another important player: Vitamin K2. Most people are familiar with Vitamin K1, which plays a crucial role in blood clotting. However, the term Vitamin K refers to various forms, each with specific effects on our bodies. The commonality is that they belong to the class of fat-soluble vitamins and all play a role in blood clotting.
Vitamin K1 is plant-based and can be found in green leafy vegetables like spinach, broccoli, and kale. A Vitamin K1 deficiency is relatively rare with a balanced diet, as it is found in many healthy foods.
Vitamin K2, on the other hand, is of bacterial origin and is mainly found in fermented foods such as sauerkraut, kefir, or natto (a Japanese dish made from fermented soybeans), and to a lesser extent in animal products like butter or eggs. Our gut bacteria can also produce some Vitamin K2, though this only contributes minimally to the body's Vitamin K2 supply.
What Does Vitamin K2 Do?
Besides blood clotting, Vitamin K2 contributes to bone strength and vascular health. It activates certain proteins (osteocalcin and matrix GLA protein) that help transport calcium to where it's needed: in the bones and teeth. On the other hand, these proteins bind free calcium, preventing it from depositing in blood vessels—a double benefit!
As many recent studies confirm, regular intake of Vitamin K2 can increase bone density and strength. Therefore, Vitamin K2 is excellent for preventing osteoporosis. Even for those already affected, K2 has shown to be highly beneficial, as it can stop bone loss and significantly reduce the number of fractures. It's no surprise that Vitamin K2 is one of the most prescribed supplements for osteoporosis in Japan!
Vitamin K2 and Vitamin D3: An Unbeatable Duo
The two vitamins are essential partners in bone metabolism. Vitamin D3 promotes calcium absorption from the intestines, while Vitamin K2 ensures the transport and incorporation of the mineral into bones and teeth. If one of these vitamins is lacking, calcium cannot enter the bloodstream effectively, or it is misdirected and ends up depositing in the vessels. Experts therefore recommend focusing on both vitamins, particularly for preventing osteoporosis.
Vitamin K2 in Its Most Bioavailable Form: All-Trans Menachinon-7 (MK-7)
Behind this complex name lies the most effective form of Vitamin K2, which our body can optimally utilize. Scientists believe that neither our gut bacteria nor the few available foods provide sufficient Vitamin K2. Therefore, it makes sense to consider supplementing with this vital vitamin to protect against bone and vascular diseases.
Our Vitamin K2 drops contain 100 µg of bioactive Vitamin K2 (MK-7), which is not derived from natto but is produced through fermentation based on processed soy protein. Due to this method, it is purer than synthetic products and is also suitable for people with a soy allergy.
