Strengthen the Immune System
“You need to strengthen your immune system” – we often hear this from our friends and family, especially when we’re feeling under the weather. However, strengthening the immune system is not something that can be done overnight. It’s a long-term process achieved through small lifestyle changes. But what can you do to easily support your body’s defense mechanisms and prevent colds?
How to Prevent a Cold
"You need to strengthen your immune system" – we all hear this phrase from our personal circles, especially when we’re feeling slightly ill. However, strengthening your immune system is not something that can be done overnight, but rather a long-term process that can be achieved through small lifestyle changes. So, what can you do to easily support your body’s defense mechanisms and prevent colds? We’d like to help you answer this question and provide you with some tips in our blog post on how to keep your immune system healthy and strong, especially during times of high infection rates. Here, we’d like to give you a brief overview of what makes us sick, how our immune system works, and when targeted strengthening is necessary.
What Makes Us Sick?
Our body is constantly exposed to various environmental factors. We come into contact with germs and infectious agents 24/7, which try to enter our bodies. Bacteria, viruses, fungi, mycobacteria, and parasites – all of these are unwelcome guests that challenge our immune system and keep it on its toes. Coming into contact with them is something we cannot avoid. However, we do not always get sick immediately because most of them are harmless to us. Some types, however, can make us sick if they manage to invade our bodies. They achieve this in various ways. Cold or flu viruses, for example, can be transmitted via droplets from coughing or sneezing. Pathogens can also be transmitted through contaminated objects and hands to sensitive mucous membranes like those of the mouth and nose, which is why regular handwashing should be a staple of your daily routine. Furthermore, germs can also enter the digestive tract through contaminated food or penetrate the skin through wounds and injuries. Once a pathogen has entered our body – no matter how – our immune system kicks into action. It identifies unwanted invaders, repels most of the pathogens, and prevents them from causing significant harm. More persistent pathogens are often linked to a longer defense process, as well as mild symptoms like coughing and a runny nose, sometimes even hoarseness or fever. These symptoms may be uncomfortable, but they are an important part of the immune response and help the body get rid of unwanted invaders. So, how exactly does our immune defense work?
How Does Our Immune System Work?
Our immune system works on three different levels to fend off pathogens. The first level is the anatomical barrier of our body, i.e., our skin and mucous membranes. Vulnerable entry points include the mucous membranes of the mouth and nose, the lower respiratory tract, and the digestive tract. These serve as a kind of armor, protecting our bodies from outside attacks. Initial defense reactions already take place here.
Pathogens that manage to breach this barrier are fought on the next level with the help of the natural or innate immune response. This activates so-called macrophages or phagocytes, which are the first to arrive at any site of inflammation or infection. They act as the body’s "police force" – anything foreign or unknown is engulfed, neutralized, and ultimately broken down.
However, these measures are often not enough. In such cases, the final line of defense, the adaptive or specific immune response, is activated. Here, specific cells like B- and T-lymphocytes target individual pathogens. Thanks to immunological memory, our immune system remembers their shape and can mount a full-force attack against these pathogens upon re-exposure. The adaptive immune response is therefore also referred to as the “intelligent defense”. A strong immune system can help us prevent common illnesses like colds.
How Can I Strengthen My Immune System?
The simplest and most important step to strengthen the immune system is to maintain a nutrient-rich and balanced diet. Whole and natural foods, fresh fruits, and vegetables provide numerous vital nutrients that support and sustain our immune function. Essential vitamins like A, C, D, and E, as well as minerals and trace elements such as iron and zinc, play a crucial role in this process. For those looking to optimize their nutrient intake, supplementing with high-quality vitamins or mineral preparations, such as our Shield or Macro-Immune Complex, can be beneficial.
A balanced diet is, however, only one of several factors needed for a healthy immune system. Regular physical activity also plays an important role. You don’t need to become a high-performance athlete to strengthen your immune system. Even moderate activities, such as 30 minutes of walking or leisurely cycling, can positively affect your body and fitness by stimulating your metabolism.
On the other hand, chronic stress can negatively impact the immune system, making us more susceptible to illness. Therefore, be sure to incorporate regular relaxation periods into both your personal and professional life, and try to stick to them. This also includes getting enough sleep. Constant lack of sleep and insufficient recovery often leave us feeling tired and exhausted, which can ultimately impair our immune system’s performance and make us more prone to infections.
Our tip: Don’t let the hype about viruses, bacteria, and other germs stress you out. In addition to good hygiene, a healthy immune system offers the best protection for our health. Always keep the four components – diet, exercise, sleep, and relaxation – in mind. This will help you support your body effectively and ensure your immune cells are ready to fight off potential threats.
