Overview of Current Nutrition Trends
With the many nutrition trends circulating in the media and reaching us throughout the day, it's easy to lose track. That's why today we want to introduce you to three of the most frequently mentioned trends. First, we’ll introduce the Paleo diet, which has often appeared under various names in the media. Then, we will explore the low-carb diet, known for its rapid weight loss results. Lastly, we will take a look at Clean Eating. For each trend, you’ll also find our subjective assessment, though, of course, everyone can have their own opinion on the matter.
The Paleo Diet: Eating Like Our Ancestors
The Paleo diet is commonly referred to as the "Stone Age diet," derived from the term "Paleolithic," or Stone Age. The concept is based on the diet of our ancestors, allowing everything that can be hunted or gathered – meat, fish, game, fruits, vegetables, eggs, berries, and mushrooms. It excludes all grains, legumes, dairy products, sugar, sugar substitutes, and artificial sweeteners. However, this is not a typical diet aimed at weight loss; rather, it is a way of eating designed to keep people fit and healthy. The effectiveness of this diet depends heavily on how the concept is interpreted. The foundation of this diet, which includes lots of vegetables and fruits, is generally considered health-promoting. However, those who focus mainly on meat and fat run the risk of increasing the likelihood of cardiovascular disease. Therefore, it's recommended to focus on lean meats and lots of vegetables when following this diet. You’ll also need a great deal of willpower, as fully implementing this concept requires breaking old habits.
The Low-Carb Diet: Cutting Out Carbohydrates
Unlike the Paleo diet, the low-carb diet, which is based on a low-carbohydrate intake, is primarily aimed at weight loss. Foods rich in fats and proteins are allowed, while carbohydrate-rich foods such as bread, pasta, and potatoes are avoided. Reducing carbohydrate intake thus leads to an increased intake of fats and proteins. However, a high-fat diet is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Due to the strict distinction between allowed and forbidden foods, relapses into old eating habits are almost inevitable. Most nutrition experts follow the recommendations of the German Nutrition Society (DGE). The DGE advises sufficient carbohydrates and fiber and low-fat intake, which should ideally come from plant sources such as nuts or rapeseed oil, to lose weight effectively. The low-carb diet is especially popular because the weight loss is particularly rapid at first. In the long run, however, the weight loss matches that of a reduced-fat diet.
Clean Eating as a Social Media Phenomenon
Especially popular among athletes and fitness enthusiasts is the nutrition trend known as Clean Eating. The basic principle of this diet is actually quite simple, as it closely aligns with the "10 rules for a balanced diet" from the DGE and is thus not a new trend. However, thanks to social media and its modern presentation, young people are currently particularly interested in nutrition and Clean Eating. This provides many with the opportunity to reconsider their current eating habits, making it a positive trend. In the 10 basic rules from the DGE, you’ll not only find recommendations for food choices but also helpful advice on optimal fluid intake and other aspects of a balanced diet.
In conclusion, nutrition trends generally encourage us to reevaluate our eating habits, and they are not just a means of losing weight. Instead, they can serve as an entry point to a healthier lifestyle. Why not give it a try? With so many options available, there’s something for everyone, and it brings variety to your diet.
